Driving Force

With Samson, sex was his undoing.
He was with a woman he shouldn’t have been with - because his own desires were in control of him.
Judg 16:19-22
19 Having put him to sleep on her lap, she called a man to shave off the seven braids of his hair, and so began to subdue him. And his strength left him.
20 Then she called, "Samson, the Philistines are upon you!" He awoke from his sleep and thought, "I'll go out as before and shake myself free." But he did not know that the LORD had left him. 21 Then the Philistines seized him, gouged out his eyes and took him down to Gaza. Binding him with bronze shackles, they set him to grinding in the prison. 22 But the hair on his head began to grow again after it had been shaved. NIV
He did not deny himself when he should have - he stopped seeing because of that and became a slave. A big lesson there, about taking our drives captive - whatever they are. Don't take your drive captive and it will enslave you. It will also blind you to the truth about God’s purpose for your life.
We are all different and have many driving forces in our lives- although there are a few that are very common – like money, sex and power. Some would say, that “no man can deny his drives forever” – that belief system is an excuse for bad behaviour and a recipe for failure before you start. Yes we can win!
1 Cor 9:25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. 27 No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. NIV
The truth is that Samson was a real "Superman" and that when the green kryptonite wore off his strength returned. God is good isn't he? He killed more of the enemy in his death than he did in his life – better to live longer and win more battles first.
